Common Types of Garage Doors

The many types of garage doors give you plenty of choices so that you have the kind of door you want to use. You may want to choose one that worked the way your last door did, or you may want to try something new for a different look and feel.

Sectional Garage Doors

Sectional Garage Doors

Most garage doors today are sectional. The doors have several horizontal panels that fit together with specialized hinges so that the door is able to bend in a curved shape.

Roll-Up Garage Doors

Roll-up doors roll overhead into a coil. They have a mechanism that causes the sections to roll together until the door is a coil that's highly compact. They take up little space and are easy to maintain.

Swing-Out or Swing-Up Doors

Swing-Out or Swing-Up Doors

These types of garage doors generally have two sections that each swing out from the middle of the garage door opening. These use large hinges to hold the doors in place and allow them to move.

Tilt-Up Garage Doors

These are doors that hang from the top part of the garage door frame and can be tilted upward to use the door. This type is perfect when the ceiling in the garage is low.

Side-Hinged Garage Doors

Side-Hinged Garage Doors

This type of garage door is attached to the side of the entrance of the garage. They then open outwards and don't need to be vertically lifted. These open quickly and won't take up garage space.

Common Styles

When it comes to garage doors, there are so many styles available that you can certainly find one that gives your home the look you want.

Raised Panel Garage

This style uses symmetrical panels that have a clean design. The panels are slightly raised to give more texture and style to the doors. They can be made of aluminum, fiberglass, or steel.

Overlay Carriage

This style of garage door has panels that are laid on top of the existing door and one that swings in and out of the opening. They resemble the old-fashioned carriage-house doors that were used with horse-drawn carriages.

Stamped Carriage

These doors are made from steel and are stamped to look like they're made from wood. This makes the doors look more like the carriage house doors that were once used, perfect for preserving historical accuracy on a restoration build.

Stamped Shaker garage

When you choose a Shaker-style garage door, these are stamped to give the doors this minimalist look while being strong and sturdy. This style is often popular in modern farmhouse designs.

Shoreline garage

These garage doors have the same look and texture as classic doors that are overlaid with wood. This keeps them sturdy and low-maintenance while giving the style of a wood overlay.

Skyline Flush garage

When you want a more contemporary look for your home, these doors deliver. They are elegant doors with clean, straight lines that look highly modern and efficient.

Overlay Recessed Panel garage

These doors have panels that are sunken into the front of the door by using an overlay. They are generally flat doors that have a raised trim surrounding them.
