Here are a few signs to look for that indicate you may be dealing with a broken spring.
If your garage door abruptly jerks closed or open, it is likely the springs are experiencing problems. The opener system has a mechanism to control how fast the door lowers and raises. When any springs are damaged, it may interfere with this safety feature due to the excess weight on other components, making it unable to control the speed.
Does your garage door suddenly feel heavy? This may be a sign that your garage door extension springs are broken and in need of replacement. Since garage doors are extremely heavy you put yourself at risk of injury trying to inspect the door on your own. It is best to leave this service to the professionals if you think something is off.
You may think a crooked garage door isn’t a big deal, but it is not a problem to be overlooked. This is typically a sign of the extension springs being broken and requires immediate attention. The door appears crooked from this issue because one side of the door is getting pulled up quicker than the other.
If a torsion spring has snapped, you could see visible gaps of up to a few inches wide. Sometimes, people can even hear a loud snapping noise coming from their garage and discover a broken spring. This will require a specialist to come in and replace the torsion spring. It is also advised to get the other springs evaluated to ensure all components work properly and none received damage from the broken spring.
You may find loose cables hanging from your garage and think the issue lies with the cables. In reality, cables will loosen or slack when the torsion springs are broken, adding more stress onto those components. This means the springs are to blame for the issue!
When the motor operates with the wall switch but not with the remote, a simple fix is replacing the batteries in the remote. Additionally, if you notice you must be closer to the garage door to operate the opener than you used to be, you may need to adjust the antenna on the motor unit. The remote programming may lose its sensitivity over time, but it can be easily reset. If you’re not sure how to reprogram your remote, check your manual, look online, or have your garage door service professional help during their visit.
If you garage door opener remote appears to be on and functioning, but nothing is happening, you may need to check the wires leading up to the wall switch, or the wall switch itself. If you hear the opener running, it’s a good sign your switch has gone bad. If messing with electrical wiring doesn’t appeal to you, grab an expert.
You may notice your door will open with no issues, but can close if you hold down your wall switch. This could be an indication your safety sensors are unaligned. Your safety sensors assure nothing is in the path of the door when closing, so there’s a chance this light on the sensors need to be replaced. Getting an inspection will check for things that may be interfering with your sensors to take care of the problem for good.
These are just a few common issues your garage door opener may face. You will definitely want to be alert for other major issues such as your opener making a grinding noise, indicating a need to replace the main gear drive. If you door won’t open all the way, you may need to check chain tension, and if the door won’t close all the way, you will need to adjust the travel of the door.
