What You'll Need Before You Start

These are typically found near the middle of your ceiling in the garage. Most people use a ladder to access the device. Also, have a friend or family member help you out with the project, which can speed things along. The only other thing you need is the remote that’s being programmed, then you’re all set!

Steps for Programming a Garage Door Opener

While there are a variety of garage door opener brands on the market, most of them can be programmed the same way.

Here are the steps for how to program a garage door opener so it will work with your remote:

  1. Climb a ladder to access the garage door opener.
  2. Locate the “learn” button on the device. You may need to remove the light cover.
  3. Press and hold the "learn" button until it blinks. After this step, you will only have 30 seconds to complete the next task. This is why having a helper may come in handy.
  4. Grab your garage door opener remote and press the button. Make sure to only press the button once, and pick the button you’ll want to use to open the garage door. Most remotes have more than one button.
  5. The garage door opener on your ceiling should flash or make two clicking sounds. This means the programming process was successful.
  6. Test if everything works by waiting a few seconds, then press the button on the remote. The button should work as intended.

While most remotes use the same process above, there are some exceptions. Make sure to look at your remote’s user manual for more specifics on programming.

  2. Find the programming button, typically labeled “learn.” You may need to remove the cover to locate it.
  3. Next, activate the button by holding down “learn” until the garage door opener blinks. Keep in mind you will only have 30 seconds to complete the next step, so consider having a friend help you out.
  4. Enter a code into the keypad before the 30 seconds have passed. Make sure to choose a code you'll remember.
  5. Press “enter” on the keypad and watch for a flashing light on the opener, or listen for two clicking sounds. The programming process should now be complete.
  6. Lastly, test your work. Wait a few seconds after programming the device and enter the code. The garage door should open with no problems.

If you’re having any trouble, refer to the keypad’s user manual. This may offer more information and troubleshooting tips.

What to Know for Older Garage Doors

If you have an older garage door, you may be wondering how the programming process works for you. To determine if your garage door opener is an older model, check to see if there’s a “learn” button. If there isn’t, you probably have an old model on your hands, meaning there’s probably a different programming process. Refer to the opener’s user manual or call a professional for assistance.
