5 Signs of a Broken Garage Door Spring

Matthew Scroggs • Mar 11, 2021

Issues with your garage door are not only frustrating but can also be tricky to troubleshoot. The springs are the most common component to fail.

Signs of a Broken Garage Door Spring

Most of the time, there are evident signs your garage door springs require immediate repair or will need repair soon. Read on below for the most common indicators of a broken garage door spring.

How to tell if your garage door spring is broken

1. DOOR CLOSES TOO FAST OR SLOW

If your garage door abruptly jerks closed or open, it is likely the springs are experiencing problems. The opener system has a mechanism to control how fast the door lowers and raises. When any springs are damaged, it may interfere with this safety feature due to the excess weight on other components, making it unable to control the speed.

2. GARAGE DOOR IS HEAVY OR NOT MOVING

Does your garage door feel heavy suddenly? This may be a sign that your garage door extension springs are broken and in need of replacement. It is best to leave this service to the professionals; since garage doors are extremely heavy you are at risk of injury trying to inspect it by yourself.

3. CROOKED GARAGE DOOR

You may think a crooked garage door is a simple issue, but it is not a problem to be overlooked. This is typically a sign of the extension springs being broken and requires immediate attention. The door appears crooked from this issue because one side of the door is getting pulled up quicker than the other.

4. GAPS IN SPRINGS

If a torsion spring has snapped, you could see visible gaps of up to a few inches wide. Sometimes, people can even hear a loud snapping noise coming from their garage and discover a broken spring. This will require a specialist to come in and replace the torsion spring. It is also advised to get the other springs evaluated to ensure all components work properly and none received damage from the broken spring.

5. LOSE CABLES

Now you might see loose cables and think those are the issue, which is a common misconception. However, when the torsion springs are broken it causes the cables to become loose or slack, adding more stress onto those components.
